At the British School, a new wave of environmental activism is emerging thanks to the efforts and dedication of two Year 11 students who have founded our school’s first Green Club. Their mission is to raise sustainability awareness across the school and transform it into a more eco-friendly environment, aiming to achieve the prestigious
“Selo Verde” award.
According to gov.br, the “Programa Selo Verde Brasil is a federal initiative that focuses on developing a national strategy for certifying and evaluating products and services with a socially and environmentally responsible life cycle. The program aims to ensure that Brazilian products and services adhere to rigorous socio-environmental standards, promoting a more sustainable economy.
For schools, the Programa Selo Verde Brasil extends this approach by encouraging educational institutions to adopt and showcase sustainable practices. Schools participating in the program must meet specific environmental criteria, which can include waste reduction, energy efficiency, and sustainable resource management.
Leticia Rzezinski, co-founder of the Green Club alongside Helena Osório, notes that Ms. Carolina Chew has been a crucial supporter and mentor in their mission. “Ms.
Carol’s dedication to sustainability inspired us to start the club,” Leticia explains. “Her guidance has been invaluable in helping us pursue our goal of earning the Selo Verde.” Leticia also shares that her commitment to sustainability was further fueled by a trip to Vila dos Sonhos, where she collaborated with Onda Solidária, another group dedicated to environmental activism.
Through their commitment and collaborative efforts, Leticia, Helena, and Carolina Chew are leading the charge in making the British School a greener, more sustainable place. It is certain that this student-lead initiative will continue prospering.
