On May 9th, 2024, three students from The British School (TBS)—Maria Antônia Filgueiras, Maria Carvalho, and Sofia Hirdes—founded Parcerias Solidárias, a social initiative dedicated to collaborating with various institutions to support important causes. Despite its recent inception, the project quickly demonstrated its ability to make an impact through resourceful action and community involvement.
Just five days after launching, Parcerias Solidárias rolled out its first major campaign. Responding to devastating floods in Rio Grande do Sul, the team formed a crucial partnership with Iguatemi Porto Alegre, a major shopping center, to secure emergency supplies for affected communities. Through a crowdfunding campaign on Vakinha, they raised an impressive R$18,008.13 by May 27th. These funds were used to purchase and deliver supplies to Abrigo Simers, a shelter that urgently needed assistance.
This campaign not only marked a successful start but also highlighted the team’s quick thinking and ability to rally support. The experience solidified Parcerias Solidárias as a capable force in social outreach.
Supporting Students at Rede Cruzada
Soon after their first campaign, the team identified another opportunity to help. During a visit to Rede Cruzada at Shopping Nova América in Rio de Janeiro, Maria, Maria, and Sofia learned that the institution’s students were preparing to compete in a Robotics Tournament. However, they lacked the R$3,100 needed for transportation and related costs.
Determined to assist, the team organised a bake sale, enlisting fellow TBS students to prepare and sell treats. Though the bake sale was successful, it wasn’t enough to meet their goal. Refusing to let the students miss out, Parcerias Solidárias held a raffle for a Fluminense Football Club jersey signed by Thiago Silva, a renowned football player. Thanks to strong community support, they raised R$4,120, covering all expenses and leaving extra funds for future projects.
A Transparent and Growing Initiative
What sets Parcerias Solidárias apart is its commitment to transparency. The team regularly updates their Instagram account, @parceriassolidarias, to keep donors and supporters informed. This transparency has been key to building trust within the community, allowing the project to grow.
Looking ahead, Parcerias Solidárias has more campaigns planned, and its founders are eager to continue making a difference. Through their determination and creativity, Maria, Maria, and Sofia are proving that TBS students can drive meaningful social change
